Every month we select an athlete that demonstrates exceptional dedication, positivity, and support toward their fellow athletes and community. Our featured “Athlete of the Month” for August 2018 is……Jan Valtera!
What’s your athletic background?
I was pretty lazy as a kid. I started with mountain biking when I was teenager and then I used to go to gym.
What was your first experience with CrossFit?
It was a 1 day CrossFit preparation course in my old box. I didn’t know what to expect at all. I just heard a lot about CrossFit and I wanted to check it as I was very tired and bored of going to gym to do weights.
When did you start CrossFit?
It was in October 2014.
Why did you choose CrossFit Schaffhausen?
I just moved to Schaffhausen and I found out that the CrossFit Schaffhausen is just across the street. So it was a very easy decision. But my partner keeps blaming me that first I checked where is the CrossFit box in Schaffhausen and based on that I was looking for an apartment there. May-be, I need to keep some secrets :o)
What keeps you coming back?
I just fell in love with CrossFit. First I was afraid that it will be just too hard for me. But then I learned that you can scale everything and you just see how fast you can get better. And I like the community. I didn’t know anyone in Schaffhausen when i moved here and I made some friends thanks to CrossFit.
How do you like to spend your free time?
I like traveling, watching movies, going out with friends.
What are one or two improvements you have seen in your life since starting CrossFit?
I can see that I got much fitter. I think that I am in a better form than I was in my 20ies. Last time I got a blood test, my doctor told me that my cholesterol level is very low and I should be very happy. I am pretty sure it has something to do with CrossFit.
What are your goals for 2018?
Finally I want to be able to do a handstand for at least 30 seconds and I want to work on my rings muscle-up. I was able to do them last year and I want to do them again.
What would you say to someone thinking about starting CrossFit?
Don’t be afraid to try. CrossFit is for everyone, not only for fit and strong guys. Nobody is going to push you to lift heavy. And it is lots of fun as you meet great people.
What’s your favorite & least favorite CrossFit movement?
Hahaha, can I skip this one? It is very hard to select just one that I don’t like as there are so many. But in general I prefer body-weight exercises like pull-ups, push-up and I am not a big fan of heavy weight-lifting (clean and jerk, deadlift, snatch). And of course I hate burpees lol.
What’s your favorite cheat meal?
Probably Pizza and beer. And I love to have a good cake and coffee during the weekends.
Anything else you would like to share with your CrossFit Schaffhausen family?
I am very happy to be a part of the CrossFit Schaffhausen and you guys are the best motivation for me to go back again and again even though it always feel I am going to die after each workout.
